What’s New in ChatGPT in 2026

Which model you get depends on your plan, and on Chat vs. Work. As of late September 2026, OpenAI’s most capable model is GPT-6 Astra, released September 3, 2026. In regular Chat, Plus and Pro subscribers use GPT-5.6 Sol with a Thinking slider that runs from Instant through Medium and High (Pro adds Extra High). Pro, Business, and Enterprise also get GPT-6 Pro, a Pro-model option powered by Astra with weekly limits that are higher on the higher Pro plans. Plus subscribers get GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex rather than in Chat. Free and Go users run on GPT-5.6 Luna, which also powers the Think button.

GPT-6 Sol and Luna (September 22, 2026). OpenAI added two faster, cheaper members of the GPT-6 family, trained with similar methods to Astra. They are live in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and Free and Go users can use GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app. OpenAI says they are not yet available in Chat. It also cut their API prices by 50 percent. Consumer subscription prices did not change.

GPT-6.1 Sol (September 29, 2026). At its DevDay event, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at about a fifth of Astra’s token prices. It runs in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu (rolling out to Pro first) and is not yet available in Chat, so the Chat model picker is unchanged. GPT-6 Astra is still OpenAI’s most capable model.

A new Pro 500 plan (September 29, 2026). ChatGPT Pro now comes in three monthly plans: Pro 100 ($100), Pro 200 ($200), and Pro 500 ($500). Pro 500 has the highest included usage and is the only Pro plan with Astra Ultrafast, a faster service tier for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex that you select in the model picker. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it. Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, but new subscriptions outside OpenAI’s grandfathering window get a lower usage allowance than before at the same $200 price. Pro 500 is sold through ChatGPT on the web.

Chat vs. Work matters more than it used to. ChatGPT Work, launched July 9, 2026 for paid plans, is an agent for longer jobs. It researches, works across connected apps and files, and produces finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and Sites, and its scheduled tasks can run on a timer or when something changes in Gmail, Slack, or GitHub. Document analysis. Uploading PDFs, spreadsheets, and images and asking questions about them is one of the most practically valuable Plus features. ChatGPT for Students and Teens

ChatGPT has quietly become a study tool as much as a chat tool, and in July 2026 OpenAI pulled several of those pieces together.

In August 2026 OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience for users aged 13 to 17. Responsible Homework Reminders can recognize when a teen appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment and steer them back to Study Mode for step-by-step problem solving rather than a finished answer. Study Hours let a teen or parent schedule times when Study Mode is on by default, which helps turn steady study habits into a routine.

Interactive math and science now covers more than 300 topics, from integrals and mitosis to moon phases and photosynthesis, and OpenAI says 18 million people use these experiences weekly. There is also a pronunciation tool covering more than 61 languages.

Teens see a different default experience: education-focused starter prompts on the home screen, stronger content safeguards, and more frequent reminders to take a break during long sessions. Parents can set quiet hours, turn off voice mode, restrict image generation, and receive notifications in high-risk situations, now including when a linked teen account is deactivated for violating OpenAI policies on violent content.

ChatGPT Workspace Agents: The Biggest Business Plan Upgrade Yet

OpenAI launched workspace agents in ChatGPT on April 22, 2026, and they meaningfully change the value calculation for the Business plan (the new name for Team). Workspace agents are persistent, shared AI agents that run in the background, handling complex multi-step workflows on behalf of your entire team: pulling data, routing approvals, drafting reports, and taking action in connected tools like Slack and Salesforce, without anyone manually triggering each step.

Hallucinations remain real. Every ChatGPT model can generate confident-sounding incorrect information, fabricated citations, or plausible but wrong code. For high-stakes use cases (medical, legal, financial), treat ChatGPT output as a first draft that requires human verification, not a final answer.
Usage limits on Plus are meaningful. Plus limits are far higher than Free, but thinking levels, Work, Codex, deep research, and Voice all have their own allowances, and power users who run dozens of complex requests a day will hit them. Plus also does not include Extra High thinking or GPT-6 Pro.
